Golf Programs Lead MAAC With Five All-Academic Team Selections

Apr 27, 2009

The Fairfield University men's and women's golf teams had a league high five student-athletes named to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) All-Academic Team on Sunday.  To be eligible for All-Academic Team selection a student-athlete must have completed two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.

"I am extremely proud of these five golfers," said Fairfield's Director of Men's and Women's Golf Len Roberto.  "The schedule of tournaments, both in the fall and spring season, is very demanding.  For them to achieve this level of success in the classroom is quite an accomplishment and I couldn't be happier for them."

The men's squad had two student-athletes selected to the All-Academic Team.  Senior R.J. Zielinski (Tolland, Conn.) earned the honor for the third time in his Fairfield career.  An accounting major, Zielinski finished 22nd at the MAAC Championship, his final outing as a Stag.  Sophomore Jeff Bradke (Oyster Bay, N.Y.), an accounting major, earns his first All-Academic Team selection.  He was the Stags top finisher at the weekend's conference championship, tying for eighth place.

The Stags women's teams had three student-athletes named to the team.  Christiana DeStefano (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) is a sophomore accounting major who graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes High School.  She was the Stags top finisher at the MAAC Championship, placing third over the weekend.  Junior Alicia Esposito (Middleton, Conn.), a Mechanical Engineering major, earns her second All-Academic Team selection.  She finished in a two-way tie for fifth-place at the conference championship.  Annie Sperandio (Lexington, Mass.), a sophomore communications major, earns her first selection to the team, and finished eighth at the weekend's conference championship.

The women's team, which won a pair of tournaments during the year, finished second at the MAAC Championships, just three strokes shy of the overall winner.  The men placed fourth at the championship, the highest finish since 2004.
