Sperandio Wins WGMA President's Cup And Club Women's Title
Jul 30, 2008
Fairfield University sophomore Annie Sperandio (Lexington,
Mass.) enjoyed a championship week as the month of July came to a
close, capturing a pair of individual titles. She began by
winning the Women’s Golf Association of Massachusetts (WGAM)
President’s Cup, and wrapped up the week with a win at the
Lexington Golf Club Women’s Club Championship.
“I am ecstatic with the way Annie played in the
President’s Cup and her club’s Women’s
Championship last week,” said Len Roberto, Director of
Men’s and Women’s Golf. “Additionally, I
was happy that she had her teammate, Kristen MacDonald, on her bag
at the President’s Cup. It shows the support and
camaraderie that our squad has, and that will benefit us in our
upcoming season.”
The President’s Cup began with 112 golfers from around the
state of Massachusetts playing an 18-hole stroke play qualifying
round. The top-64 golfers were split into two flights, the
top 32 in the Amateur Cup, and the second flight comprising the
President’s Cup field, with Sperandio the 27th seed in the
President’s Cup field.
Sperandio captured her round of 32 match 1 up, defeating
number-six seed, Diane Nessralla. In the round of 16 she
defeated the 11-seed, Sue Curtin, 2 up. The Stag continued
her strong play with a 2 and 1 victory over the 19-seed, Barbara
Quinn in the quarterfinal, and a 3 and 1 victory over Alison
Cowles, the 10th seed, in the semifinals. Sperandio met the
eight-seed, Courtney Dampob, and prevailed 3 and 2.
In earning the Women’s Club Championship at her home course,
Lexington Golf Club, she carded a personal best 76 in the first
round, and shot 83 on Sunday to seal the victory.
Sperandio begins her sophomore year at Fairfield in September,
with the Stags first event being the Towson Classic, Sept. 7-9, in
Baltimore, Md.
