Fairfield University junior midfielder Greg Downing (Auburn, N.Y.) was named an STX/USILA All-America Honorable Mention, announced this afternoon during the national semifinals in Philadelpia, Pa.
Downing becomes the first Fairfield lacrosse player to earn two All-America selections. He was named All-America Honorable Mention following his sophomore campaign as well.
Downing finished the campaign as the team leader with 26 goals, despite missing two games with an injury. His 2.36 goals per game ranks him among the nations leaders. He finished the year third on the team with 35 points, having dished out nine assists.
Downing was named First Team All-ECAC this season, as well as earning First Team All-NEILA honors. A preseason All-American Honorable Mention, Downing was also on the original Tewaaraton Award Watch List, at the seasons start.
Downing ranks fifth all-time at Fairfield with 114 points for his career. his 81 career goals is also fifth on the list, and is on pace to become just the fourth 100 goal scorer in program history.
Fairfield finished the 2006 campaign with a 6-7 overall record. In their first season as a member of the ECAC Lacrosse League, the Stags finished fifth with a 4-3 mark, including a win over nationally ranked Loyola. The Stags also had national finalist, and top-10 ranked UMass on the ropes till the final minute of play, before falling on the road.
