Jun 23, 2009
The Fairfield University men's lacrosse team had five student-athletes named to the ECAC All-Academic Team, announced by ECAC Commissioner Rudy Keeling on Tuesday.
In order to be selected to the team, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA through at least four semesters of work at his current institution, be a significant contributor to his team, and have participated in at least 50 percent of the games (33 percent of the minutes for goalies).
Headlining the Stags selection was senior defender Billy Honovich (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.), who started all 13 games for the Stags in 2009. He finished the year with 37 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers, while also touching net for the first time in his career. Honovich graduated in May with a B.S. in Accounting.
Junior Mike Gianelle (Salisbury, Md.) saw action in 12 games, with four starts, as a member of the Stags defensive unit. A finance major, he had five ground balls and four caused turnovers in 2009.
Three sophomores, Sean Bannon (Greenwich, Conn.), Steve Golmont (Martinsville, N.J.) and Doug Kuring (New Milford, Conn.), were also named to the squad. Bannon, a finance major, started nine of the 13 games he appeared in at long-stick midfielder and defense. He had 20 ground balls, five caused turnovers and a goal and an assist.
Golmont, a midfielder won 81 face-offs on the year, tops on the team, while also touching net. A marketing major, he appeared in eight games. Kuring, an attack, saw action in 10 games, with four starts. He scored three times, dished out four assists, and finished eighth on the team with seven points.
Fairfield posted a 7-6 record in 2009, the first under head coach Andy Copelan. The Stags went 4-3 in ECAC play, finishing third, the program's top finish in its four seasons in the league.
