Men's Lacrosse Has Four Players Honored By NEILA

May 14, 2008

The Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team had four players honored with selection to the 2008 New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) All New England Division I team, announced on Tuesday.  Senior and Matt Scanlon (Bel Air, Md.) was named first team at long stick midfielder, and was joined on by junior Chris Ajemian (Duxbury, Mass.) who was selected in the midfield.  Senior Chris Atwell (Kennebunkport, Me.) and junior Matt Petre (Somers, N.Y.) were both named to the second team as defenders.

For Scanlon it is his second consecutive first team All-NEILA nod, and comes a week after being named All-ECAC first team.  The John Carroll High School graduate led the team in ground balls, with 42, and in caused turnovers, with 25.

Ajemian is recognized with a postseason award for the first-time in his three-year career with the Stags.  A graduate of Duxbury High School, the midfielder finished the season tops on the team with 15 goals, including the game-winner versus Dartmouth.  Ajemian completed the season second on the squad with 22 points.  He was also third on the team with 27 ground balls.

Atwell was a four-year starter for the Stags and earns All-NEILA honors for the second time.  A graduate of Loomis-Chaffee, he played in all 13 games for the Stags in the defensive unit.  This season Atwell recorded 21 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers, while netting his only collegiate goal in the game at St. John’s.

Petre is also a first-time All-NEILA selection as he completed his third season as a member of the Stags defensive unit.  A graduate of Somers High School he played in 13 games with 12 starts to his credit.  He finished the season third on the team with 28 ground balls and had 12 caused turnovers, good for second on the squad.

The Stags four All-NEILA selections are the second most of any season in program history, as the 2002 team picked up five All-NEILA honorees.  Since 1999 Fairfield has 26 All-NEILA honorees, including 11 in the last three seasons.
