Nelson, Kuring Honored By ECAC; Stags Move Up In National Polls
Mar 10, 2008
The Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team has earned
recognition for its 10-7 win over Rutgers University on
Saturday. Senior Travis Nelson (Oswego, N.Y.) was named the
ECAC Offensive Player of the Week, while rookie Doug Kuring (New
Milford, Conn.) was named the ECAC co-Rookie of the Week. It
marks the third consecutive week that the Stags have been honored
with weekly awards, the first for Nelson, and second for
Kuring.
In addition to the individual accolades, the Stags moved up in
both national polls, after improving to 3-0 for the second
consecutive years. Fairfield received 50 points in the USILA
Coaches poll to move to 16th place, up from 20th in the previous
poll. The Stags moved into the Nike/Inside Lacrosse poll for
the first time, tying with Ohio State, at 20th, with 26
points. Additionally the Stags remained atop the NEILA
Coaches Poll, for the second consecutive week.
Nelson, a graduate of Oswego High School, had a hand in 60 percent
of the Stags offense in the win over ECAC foe Rutgers. He
netted four goals in the game, a season-high, and added two
assists, one of which led to the game-winning goal. He enters
the week as the Stags leader in all three offensive categories,
with six goals, five assists and 11 points.
Kuring, a New Milford High School graduate, earned his second ECAC
Rookie of the Week award in just his third week as a collegiate
player. He touched net twice in the Stags win at Rutgers on
Saturday, including the game-winning tally. Kuring is the
ECAC leader with two game-winning goals this year, and ranks second
on the team with seven points, including four goals.
The Stags are active this week as they continue their three-game
road trip. The first game is on Tuesday, at #15/16 Bucknell
(game
notes), before traveling to Harvard for a contest on
Saturday.
